Time Belays

Time Belays

be-lay

–verb (used with object) 1. Nautical. to fasten (a rope) by winding around a pin or short rod inserted in a holder so that both ends of the rod are clear.
2. Mountain Climbing. a. to secure (a person) by attaching to one end of a rope.
b. to secure (a rope) by attaching to a person or to an object offering stable support.
3. (used chiefly in the imperative) a. to cease (an action); stop.
–verb (used without object) 4. to belay a rope: Belay on that cleat over there.
–noun 5. Mountain Climbing. a rock, bush, or other object sturdy enough for a running rope to be passed around it to secure a hold.

Redeeming the time literally means to buy it up. Kind of like time shares. Think of a week as income. Each hour is to be spent on something. Maybe a necessity, maybe recreation or pleasure, maybe an investment. Each moment is important and worth something to you.

It would be easy to go through the normal "are we wasting God's time" line and while that is relevent and important sometimes that's hard to motivate us. Fortunately there's another reason. It secures us. Time well spent offers support and stability. It allows us to hold our ground and ensures that if we slip we don't end up in greater peril.

Time well spent is investment against the time to come. That time spent on pursuits that renew our focus on the goal is another point of belay; A point we can use when we slip; Something that will secure us. It's an anchor of our souls. We grab hold and pull ourselves up. A slip that may be fatal to someone else is only a temporary setback. You took the time to establish a strong and stable support.

Keep track of your money. Chart out your investments. Don't forget your goal.

The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. Who knoweth the power of thine anger? even according to thy fear, so is thy wrath.

So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom... And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.

A Poem by a sister

This Poem was given to Harry Tennant by a sister based on a discussion he had with her. Here it is (excuse punctuation I didn't have time):

Oh turn me inside out Lord So that what I am is Seen
And may there be no trace there of what I once have been
For should my inner self be bared revealing hidden sham
Then those who looked upon me would see me as I am.

Then harboured things I'd clung to, and carefully concealed
So no one was aware of, would plainly be revealed
And every foolish empty word and things I did for show
And any unkind feelings, these everyone would know.

Then Oh what fear would seize me, Every fiber tense
If all my thoughts and actions were much in evidence
Would there be some my brethren who would look and then pass by
As if they never knew me... not knowing it was I?

So may I live as if my heart and mind transparent be
Knowing we are naked and opened Lord to thee.

Ni Hao!

IMG_1762

We made it after all!

I'm determined to keep up some kind of diary for this trip.

Thursday, November 1st.

Five minutes after I got off te computer with all my notes etc. We headed out the door on our trip down to Seattle.

Stops:

1. Mum and Dad's house for a big stack of CDs for the Ecclesia in Taipei.
2. Tim and Sarah's for travel pillows and to drop off a thing or two.
3. Kamloops for Wendy's and what turned out to be a free sandwich!
4. Candace's house in Surrey for Candace.
5. Border crossing for trouble free entrance into USA.
6. Seattle.

When we got to Seattle I was busy on the computer doing some work I couldn't do at home. In the mean time Naomi weighed our luggage (which all was in 1 heavily overstuffed suitcase). After some weight distribution and repacking we were set to go.

With Thy Might

Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.
- Ecclesiastes 9:10

KEEP telling yourself over and over (if it is true -- and it is almost certainly to be true), there is something I should be doing right now, more important than this, more related to eternity, more helpful to others, more useful to the Truth; less childish, less foolish, less selfish. Some day I will go to bed to sleep and I will be thankful that I have made the effort required, that I will work hard on forever hereafter with satisfaction and joy; and no regret or embarrassment. Perhaps God is watching at this very moment to see if I am suitable for Hos eternal use and pleasure; whether the deepest recesses of my heart are fleshly or spiritual; whether the natural bent of my heart is fleshly, and the "spectacle" is but a veneer; or whether the spiritual is the true self; sincerely struggling against the terrible power of the flesh.
Is this moment the watershed of my destiny? Shall I go on from here in prayerful, intelligent, organized spiritual self-discipline or drift week by week into the cosy valley of death; or put ineffectual sociality between both? Take your life firmly in hand and give it unto the Lord. There may be NO tomorrow. For millions there will not be, and will never be again. Today is eternally appealing, and God may have decided today that we have had tomorrow enough.

We had a busy weekend Backpacking!

We went packing to Margie Lake. See the google snapshot below. We went to Valley of the moon, Peters lake x2 and Josh and Stephen H went to Mount Fosthall. It was beautiful. More pictures to come.
